My Top Ten Waterfalls

1. Havasu Falls – Havasu Canyon, Arizona

This 100-foot tall plunge easily tops my list. The blue-green water is simply amazing. There is a small, but pristine beach at its base and the travertine formations around the fall are out of this world. I actually have a photo I took of this waterfall tattooed on my left leg.

 

2. Mooney Falls – Havasu Canyon, Arizona

This spectacular 200-foot tall waterfall is just a mile or so down canyon from Havasu Falls. It is more secluded, located in a grotto. Reaching the oasis takes more effort, as you have to descend through travertine tunnels, but the journey is definitely worth it.

 

3. Vernal Fall – Yosemite National Park, California

This is my favorite of Yosemite’s many astounding waterfalls. I first saw this one a couple of days after Yosemite Valley flooded, meaning much more water was flowing than normal. It made the thunderous fall even more impressive than normal. This wide waterfall is 317-feet tall.  I previously wrote about this.

 

4. Lower Falls – Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

This frothy beast is 308-feet tall. It is showcased in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. I think the Lower Falls is the most impressive sight in all of Yellowstone. I rank it ahead of Old Faithful and the other geysers, all the hot springs and pools, the gigantic lake, and the many mountains within the park.

 

5. Nevada Fall – Yosemite National Park, California

This is easily the tallest waterfall on my list so far, at 594-feet tall. It is a couple of miles past Vernal Fall on Yosemite’s Mist Trail. Vernal Fall is massive and folds over a cliff, while Nevada explodes off the side of a mountain.

 

6. Rock Falls – Havasu Canyon, Arizona

Like the first two waterfalls on my list, this one resides in Havasu Canyon. This one is only about 30-feet tall, but is about 100-feet wide. There is a nice swimming area beneath the fall, similar to the one at Havasu Falls. Again, the water’s immaculate color and stunning oasis-in-the-desert scenery make this a phenomenal sight.

 

7. Yosemite Falls – Yosemite National Park, California

Widely regarded as the tallest waterfall in North America, Yosemite Falls drops 2,425 feet in three stages. Its height can be overwhelming. It becomes little more than a trickle after summer, so go in the Spring when water levels are at their peak.  My photo is of Lower Yosemite Fall (the bottom of the three sections of the waterfall).

 

8. Takakkaw Falls – Yoho National Park, British Columbia

This fall is 991-feet tall. It kind of looks like Yosemite Falls’ younger brother. It is tall and thin and striking. I enjoyed a short walk with my wife from the parking lot to the base of the waterfall.

 

9. Bridalveil Falls – Yosemite National Park, California

Yet another Yosemite waterfall on my list. This one is 617-feet tall. It is another narrow chute, but it flows year round, whereas Yosemite Fall can dry up late in the year.

 

10. Lower Falls – Letchworth State Park, New York

The final waterfall on my list is the only one within a day’s drive of my home. The waterfall is 70-feet tall and about 300-feet wide. It is beautiful in the fall when the river is surrounded by colorful foliage. I also proposed to my wife beside this waterfall (and wrote about it in a previous post).
