If you like waterfalls, this is the time to visit Yosemite National Park. Yosemite Valley was briefly closed due to flooding, but it reopened this morning. The rain didn’t hit Yosemite as hard as expected, however the Merced River did eclipse flood levels. As a result, the incredible valley’s waterfalls should be overflowing with life. Yosemite Fall, one of the tallest waterfalls in the world is surely exploding into the air. Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall, both highlights of the Mist Trail must be soaking the trail and all hikers in the area. Bridalveil Fall and even the extremely thin Horsetail Fall are flowing tumults following the flood.
I wish I could see Yosemite Valley’s amazing waterfalls right now, but I live in Western New York, so that’s not going to happen. If I lived nearby I would definitely be there now.
My first visit to Yosemite was in May of 2005. There was a flood then, too. The morning I arrived the valley was closed to all visitors. My friend and I tried to take it in stride. We hiked throughout the highly saturated Mariposa Grove for a few hours. Then we learned that our campground was also closed due to the flooding and park rangers had no idea when the valley would reopen. So, we changed up our itinerary and met up with friends in San Francisco for a couple days. Then Yosemite Valley reopened and we returned.
The waterfalls were truly gushing. All of Yosemite’s amazing sights were phenomenal, but the illustrious waterfalls were out of this world. We got absolutely soaked by Vernal Fall on the Mist Trail. The falls were flowing with such fury I couldn’t take my eyes off of them.

So January is the good month to see Yosemite Falls and around it?

Normally I would lean towards the Spring (April and March) for strong flowing waterfalls and warmer weather. The winter can be good, but it’s unpredictable.
